“How did she do last night?” Doug asked when his brother opened the door the next morning.
“No problems.” Colby reported handing him a sheet of paper with Mindy’s recorded vitals. While Doug went in to examine her, he started breakfast. He made cream of wheat for Mindy to eat. He brought it into the bedroom as Doug was finishing up. Propping pillows behind her, Colby fed her the warm cereal.
“I’m not very hungry.” She complained between bites.
“You need to eat.” He replied feeding her another spoonful.
“I can feed myself.” She muttered.
“I don’t want crumbs in my bed.” He answered with a smile. He made her eat the whole bowl. “I have to get to class. But Doug is here, so if you need anything just call him. I brought this bell for you to ring.” He told her as he cleaned up.
“I’m fine, I don’t need anyone to watch after me.”
“Call him if you need to use the bathroom.” He said ignoring her comment.
“Fine.” She said lying down. She pulled the covers up.
“Get some rest.” He told her leaning down to tuck the covers around her. He kissed her cheek gently.
“Did she eat?” Doug asked looking up from the paper. He was drinking a cup of coffee.
“Yes, I warmed up some pastries for you. They’re in the oven.” Colby told him as he put the dirty dished in the dishwasher. “I’ll see you this afternoon.” He picked up his book bag and headed for the garage.
Mindy slept most of the day. Doug checked on her every two hours, waking her to do vitals. She was drugged up on pain and muscle relaxants that made her groggy. Everything was a blur; it was a struggle just to make it into the bathroom. Late that afternoon she woke up with a feeling of dread. Colby was going after the guy that tried to rape her. He had left school and driven to the guy’s office. She would have to stop him; she didn’t want him to get into trouble.
“Where’s Colby?” Matt asked when Doug opened the door for him.
“Not here yet.” Doug replied with a shrug.
“He gets off at three-thirty. It’s almost five.” He said glancing at his watch.
“He has finals this week, classes probably ran long.”
“Maybe.” Matt said with a frown.
“What are you doing out of bed?” Doug demanded as Mindy stumbled into the living room.
“You need to stop Colby.” She told them as she grabbed onto the arm of the couch to steady herself.
“What do you mean?” Matt asked as a cold chill moved through him.
“He’s going after my attacker.”
“You told him who it was?” Doug asked getting angry.
“No, I didn’t have too.” She replied.
“Who is it?” Matt asked.
She quickly filled Matt in on her attacker. “His address is in my day planner. Hurry! Colby’s waiting for everyone to leave before he goes in.”
“You’d better come with me.” Matt told Doug as he flipped through Mindy’s day planner.
“What about Mindy?”
“I’ll be fine. Just stop Colby.” Mindy told them. She was sitting on the couch.
“Let’s go.” Matt said tearing the page out with the address.
Colby waited patiently for the building to clear out for the day. He kept an eye out for Brett Thompson. It was easy to slip past security in the crowded lobby. He made his way toward Brett Thompson’s office. The secretary had left for the day. Brett was on his way out. But as he reached his office door he, was confronted by a very angry man that punched him. Colby was in a rage, he’d never been so angry. He tore into Brett, throwing punch after punch. Brett was no match for Colby, the force of Colby’s last punch sent him flying over his desk. Colby started around the desk but was grabbed from behind. “Take it easy, you’ll kill him.” Matt said as he struggled to hang on to Colby.
“Let me go.” Colby said calming down he stopped struggling.
“Who the hell are you?” Brett mumbled blood pouring from his nose and mouth.
“Friends of Mindy’s.” Doug answered. Colby had beaten the shit out of the guy, which was no better then he deserved.
“That little slut sent you.” He muttered.
“Easy.” Matt said stepping in front of Colby when he started toward Brett again.
“You tried to rape her?” Doug said.
“She’s lying.” Brett answered.
“Those scratches on your face tell a different story.” Matt replied.
“You need medical attention, I’ll call a cab for you.” Doug replied.
“I’m calling the police.” The man reached for the phone on his desk.
“I’d think about it before I involved the police in this matter. You bring charges against him. And I’ll make sure you stand trial for attempting to rape my friend. We collected DNA evidence off her. It would be easy to link you to her attack. If you're smart you'll take a cab to the hospital and keep your mouth shut.” Matt advised him.
“Who the hell are you?”
“I’m an attorney with the L.A County Prosecutor’s office.” Matt answered flashing his badge. “Mindy has some powerful friend’s.”
“I won’t say nothing.” Brett said and swallowed hard.
“I’ll help you downstairs. There’s a cab waiting.” Doug said putting his phone back in his pocket. “Get him out of here.” He told Matt indicating Colby.
“Let’s go.” Matt said nudging Colby out of the room.
“How did you know I was here?” Colby asked as they started down the hall.
“Mindy told us.”
“How did she know?” Colby wondered. He hadn’t told her that he planned to come down here. And yet she had known.
“I thought you told her.” Matt replied in surprise.
“No.” He commented with a frown.
“It was a stupid move, you’ll be lucky if you don’t end up in jail.”
“It was worth it. Who’s staying with Mindy?”
“No one.”
“What? You left her alone?”
“Didn’t have a choice.” Matt replied as Colby unlocked his car door.
“You should have left Doug there.” He replied getting into his SUV. He unlocked the passenger door so Matt could get in.
“You’re going to be late for work.”
“I called in sick.” Colby said as they pulled out of the parking lot.
