Desari's Enchanted Love Stories

 Legacy's Forbidden Love part forty-two

Kristen got up at four-thirty in the morning, having tossed and turned most of the night. She dressed in a pair of jeans and a long sleeved shirt. Pulling on a jacket she headed downstairs. The house was quiet, no servants about. She walked quietly not wanting to disturb anyone. She noticed that security was up and patrolling the halls. But they paid no attention to her as they made their rounds. She left the house to walk down to the Foreman’s office, where she waited on the steps for Will to arrive.
“You’re awful early. Work doesn’t start till six.” Will told her when he arrived.
“I needed to talk to you.” She told him following him into his office.
“As a matter of fact I needed to talk to you as well.” He replied. He had spoken to the assistant foreman about her. And he had claimed he hadn’t hired her. “Who hired you Miss, because we can’t seem to find any record of your hire?”
“That’s what I wanted to talk to you about. I don’t work here.” She told him.
“Than why were you mucking out tables yesterday?” He asked in confusion.
“You asked me too.” She answered simply.
“If you don’t work here, what the hell were you doing here yesterday?” He demanded rubbing his beard.
“I’m Trey’s fiancée; I came down to look at the horses.” She answered honestly.
“You’re Trey’s fiancée?” He asked in surprise.
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you tell me this yesterday?” He questioned her. He didn’t know whether to believe her or not.
“I didn’t mind cleaning out the stall, I’m a farm girl and it gave me something to do. But Trey was pretty mad about it. He’s going to call you today.” She admitted with a shrug. “I better be going.” She said rising from the chair.
Will waited until she had left before picking up the phone. He dialed Edward’s number. He was an early riser and would be up. When he answered Will filled him in on the strange conversation.

It wasn’t quite six in the morning when Trey entered his office. His intent to beat his grandfather into work. He needed to make some adjustments to his computer files before he turned his computer over to his grandfather for inspection. He was too late! His grandfather was seated at his desk reviewing files on his computer. Shit! “How long have you been here?” Trey asked taking a seat in a chair facing his desk.
“Since four, I knew you’d be in early.” Edward answered. “You’re slipping boy, this is the first time I’ve beat you into the office.”
Trey just shrugged in defeat. He should have come in after he finished up with his Dad. But he had been tired, and decided to get a couple hours of sleep. The last week had taken its toll on him. He hadn’t gotten a good night’s sleep since meeting Kristen. He wondered how his Grandpa had gotten by the security measures on his computer. Most of his files were coded, but there the old man sat surfing through his files. He must have had a security expert break into my computer he thought grimly. He waited patiently, while the old man searched his files.
“Interesting, there’s a number of deals here that I don’t remember authorizing.” Edward stated still looking over the files on Trey’s computer.

“You must have forgotten.” Trey replied with a shrug.
“I told you not to pursue the mine in Africa, too risky. So why do I see a purchase order for a mine in Africa.” Edward demanded angrily.
“Don’t worry I didn’t invest any money from Harrington. Josh and I are funding it with our trust funds.” Trey replied calmly.
“Why risk your trust funds?” Edward asked in surprise.
“That mine is rich in diamonds. The pay off will be huge.” Trey answered calmly.
“The cost is too high, and that whole area is unstable as well.” Edward told him angrily.
“I found an investor, to help with the cost.” Trey assured him.
“Which means splitting the profits?” Edward replied.
“No, the investor bought into a section that is off the main vein of diamonds. Will have sole procession of the main vein.” Trey told him with a smile.
“What idiot would agree to take on half the cost, without sharing fully in the profits?” Edward asked in amazement.
“Someone who will do anything their wife asks of them.” He answered.
“I take it you know the wife in question.” Edward asked with a smile. He was well aware of Trey’s reputation with women.
“Yes.”
“Does the husband know you’re involved with his wife?”
“No.” Trey said shaking his head.

“What about Kristen?” Edward asked turning back to the files.
“What about her?” Trey asked.
“Don’t you think your involvement with this woman is going to upset her?” Edward asked glancing at him.
“I’m not involved with her. I slept with her to make the deal, my involvement with her ended when her husband signed the contract.”
“Do you plan to keep bedding other women once you’re married?” Edward asked directly, turning to study Trey.
“No.” Trey said.
“Are you sure? You cheated on your last wife.” Edward told him, watching the surprise register on his grandson’s face.
Trey stared in shock at his grandfather. He had no idea that his grandfather knew about his marriage. It had been a well kept secret. Or so he thought. “How did you know?” Trey asked in disbelief.
“Did you really think that you could get married without me finding out about it?” Edward asked with a smile. “Unlike your father I keep a very close eye on you.”
“You never mentioned it.” Trey said trying to get a hold of his self.
“I was pissed off about it. Wrote you out of my will and out of my life!” Edward told him still angry over Trey’s actions. “Than your wife was killed, and you murdered the men responsible. Which was my fault to some extent?” Edward admitted grimly.
“Your fault?” Trey asked in confusion.

“I protect my family! But you pissed me off bad enough that I withdrew my protection. Those men never would have gotten to her if I hadn’t withdrawn the wall of protection around you.”
“What wall, I didn’t have any guards with me in Europe.” Trey said.
“Just because you don’t see it, doesn’t mean the wall isn’t around you.”
“How do you think I found out you were cheating on your wife?”
“You have people watching me?” Trey asked finally.
“At all times. There’s nothing you do that I don’t know about.” Edward commented.
“Why didn’t you tell me you knew?” Trey said his thoughts still racing.
“She was killed; I know what it’s like to lose a wife. I let you handle it the way you wanted. Until now! I cheated on your grandmother plenty. And it caused a lot of problems. I was discreet, but she still heard about it.”
“I’m not going to cheat on Kristen.” Trey told him firmly. “I always regretted cheating on Francesca.”
“I hope so, because it will go hard on Kristen if you’re unfaithful to her.” Edward commented. “Why did you get married?” Edward asked.
“I was in love.” Trey said.
“Were you, or were you just infatuated with her.” Edward asked him.
“What do you mean?” Trey asked with a frown.

“I loved my first wife dearly; I never cheated on her once. Had no desire for any other woman, your father has been faithful to your mother for twenty-three years.”
“So?” Trey replied feeling uneasy.
“It makes me wonder whether you really loved your wife.” Edward told him.
“I did.” Trey replied. He had loved his wife, hadn’t he?
“Do you love Kristen?” Edward asked him.
“I care for her.” Trey answered honestly.
“She loves you; it’s there in her eyes.” Edward said with a sigh.
“I know.” Trey answered feeling guilty because he couldn’t return her love.
“I gave you my blessing last night, but I’m not so sure I made the right call. The fact that you didn’t sleep with her last night worries me.” Edward said turning away from the computer to face Trey.
“What makes you think I didn’t sleep with her?” Trey asked.
“You entered your room at a little after one last night. Kristen left her room a few minutes later. She wandered the halls for a while until she bumped into one of the security guards. Who than directed her to the kitchen. She got back to her room a little after two. You left your room at five this morning and came here. Kristen left her room at four-thirty, and headed down to the stables where she was waiting for Will when he arrived at his office at 5am.”
“What?” Trey asked. “Why didn’t anybody alert me she was out of her room?”
“Because they alerted me.” Edward said.
“What the hell was she doing down at Will’s office at five in the morning?” Trey asked angrily.
“She went there to confess that she had misled Will about being an employee at the ranch. I admire that girl, she could have left it to you to handle. But she didn’t, she took responsibility for lying to Will. Which is why I know you didn’t sleep with her last night. It stands to reason she wouldn’t have been wandering all over the place if you had been with her. So why didn’t you sleep with her?”
“It was late when I finished up with Dad. I didn’t want to disturb her, she needs her rest.” Trey answered honestly. He was going to wring Damon’s neck. He was supposed to be watching her. He’d be sleeping with her tonight. He didn’t give a damn what his father said. Clearly he needed to keep a close eye on the girl. Had she slept at all he wondered grimly.
“I think it’s time I set you straight on a few things. Clearly your Dad doesn’t have any control over you, since you do whatever you damn well please. I’m not your father; I don’t have blinders on where you’re concerned. I know exactly what you’re up to at all times. Do you really think you could get one cent out of this company without my say so? I know all about the deals you think, you’re slipping under my nose. I’ve given you the rope to hang yourself with. So far your instincts have been on. Your gambles have paid off. But one of these days you’re going to hang yourself with one of these deals, and I’ll be there to kick your ass when it happens. My review of you is unfavorable. Your personal life is a mess. You weren’t in love with that girl in Europe. You married her because she was knocked up. A mistake I thought you’d learn from! But you’ve gone and gotten another girl knocked up. This time it’s a sixteen year, old girl. That’s going to cause a hell of a scandal if it comes out. I flew here intent on stopping you from making another bad mistake. But Kristen wasn’t what I had expected at all. The girl in Europe wasn’t a virgin; she’d been around a bit before you. I don’t believe you would have married her if she hadn’t gotten pregnant. Nor do I believe that pregnancy was an accident. You must have really wanted Kristen to go against your own brother. You’ve always been very loyal to your family. And you tend to be very protective of your siblings. Which tells me just how much you must have wanted this girl? You knew it would destroy Josh, but you took her anyway. That’s why you have my blessing on this union. But I’ll tell you this; I’ve had it with your behavior. I like this girl; I don’t want to see her hurt. If I hear that you’re mistreating her, I’ll make sure that you never see her again.” Edward told Trey firmly. “I won’t coddle you the way your Dad does.”

Trey didn’t miss the threat. His grandfather had never threatened him before. Why did he like Kristen so much? Before Trey could think of a reply his father entered the office.
“Dammit Dad, you could have waited for me.” John told him.
“I just finished Trey’s review, it wasn’t favorable!” Edward said getting up from Trey’s desk.
“What did he do now?” John asked surprised to hear his Dad censor Trey. His father had always favored Trey. Too much in John’s opinion! Christ! What had Trey done?
“I’ll be in your office.” Edward said ignoring his question. “Don’t forget lunch Trey. And remember what I said.”
“What the hell did you do now?” John asked turning to his son. Trey didn’t say a word. Just got up and walked over to the bar to pour himself a drink. His hands were shaking.
“What’s wrong? What the hell did he say?” John asked seeing how unsteady his son was. It had to be bad; he had never seen Trey’s hands shake.
“He threatened me.” Trey answered without thinking.
“What?” John asked angrily. No one threatened his son, not even his father.
“It’s no big deal; you threaten me all the time.” Trey said getting a hold of himself. But he was worried; his Grandpa had the power to take Kristen away from him.
“He threatened your life?” John demanded.
“No, worse.” He answered. A threat to his own life wouldn’t have fazed him.
“What than?” John prodded again.
“He threatened to take Kristen away from me.” Trey said gulping down the whiskey. “Don’t let him take her away from me?” Trey asked feeling vulnerable for the first time in his life.

“No one is going to take her away from you. I’ll see to that.” John promised him seeing the fear in Trey’s eyes. Seeing fear in his son’s eyes shook John to his core. His father had gone to far this time!
“Morning.” Damon said coming into the office.
“Where the hell were you last night?” Trey shouted. “You were supposed to be watching Kristen?” He said when Damon didn’t say anything.
“I was Boss.” Damon said in confusion.
“Than why didn’t you tell me Kristen was up wandering the house last night?” Trey demanded angrily.
“What? Boss I left word with the guards to call me if she left her room.” Damon said in surprise.
“Well they didn’t, they called my Grandpa instead. You get your ass back out to the ranch and you watch over her! She doesn’t go anywhere without you. Do you understand? Take the other boy’s with you.” Trey told him.
“What about you Boss?” Damon questioned uneasy about leaving Trey unguarded.
“Dino’s here.” Trey answered him.
“Okay.” Damon said turning to leave.
“Calm down son, I’ll talk too Dad.” John told him. He left the office and headed to his father’s office. Edward’s office took up much of the floor. It contained a full bar, large conference table. A huge bath and dressing room. As well as a bedroom! Edward’s desk was a massive oak work center. There were several black leather couches and a large glass topped coffee table. The floors were wood; several large rugs covered the floor. Edward was at work behind his desk. He glanced up at John in surprise. “What the hell’s eating you?” He asked noting John’s red face. He looked as if he was about to erupt.
“You threatened my son.” John said storming toward the desk in an angry rage.
“So?” Edward asked.
“You don’t threaten my sons, ever!” John yelled his fists clenched at his side.
“Calm down, I can’t believe he went crying to you about it. Dammit! You’re turning him into a wussy as well.” Edward said getting mad.
“I’m warning you Dad! If you do anything that hurts that boy, you’ll regret it.” John told him angrily.
“Are you threatening me?” Edward said rising to his feet.
“Yes.”
The two men glared at each other over the desk. The door opened and Trey entered followed by Josh. “I see you went running to Daddy!” Edward said with a sneer in his voice. Trey just shrugged, having regained his composure.
“Sit down Josh, will get your review done now. You two go make sure everything is ready for the meeting.” Edward said dismissing them in disgust.
“With the exception of the Arizona project, there wasn’t much to review. Clearly Trey has you doing meaningless grunt work.” Edward said.
“My question is why aren’t you handling more projects of your own?”
“Trey’s in charge, ask him.” Josh grumbled.
“I don’t have to ask him. Clearly Trey doesn’t believe you’re capable of handling more important projects. I’m surprised he gave you the Arizona Project.”
“He didn’t want to. But he had too much on his plate, and Dad told him to give it to me.” Josh admitted.
“Be that as it may, you handled the Arizona project well.” Edward said. “Which show’s you have what it takes to be a bigger player at Harrington. It’s time you stepped out of your brother’s shadow and took some imitative.”
“Trey won’t like that.” Josh told him quietly.
“What’s wrong with you boy? Why do you let him walk all over you?” Edward demanded angrily.
“He doesn’t.” Josh answered defensively.
“Seems to me he does. He has you doing his grunt work on projects. He gets all the glory, and you do the real work. Not to mention he stole your girl right from under your nose.” Edward taunted.
The last thing he needed was to be reminded that Trey had stolen Kristen from him. He didn’t really care that Trey gave him grunt work. That was Trey he enjoyed being in charge, taking risks. Josh had always let Trey take the lead in things. He didn’t like being in the hot seat, which was where Trey was most of the time.
“Nothing to say for yourself?” Edward asked.
“No.” Josh said.
“Your weak, that’s your problem. I real man would have fought for the woman that he loved.” Edward pointed out.
“I did fight for her, she chose Trey because he got her pregnant.” Josh said getting angry.
“Why didn’t you bed her?” Edward asked.
“She’s only sixteen I didn’t want to push her into something she wasn’t ready for.” Josh said defending his actions.
“That’s why you’re a failure! Your brother goes after what he wants, he always has. Which is why he’s so successful?” Edward told him shaking his head.
“I’m not a failure!” He shouted at his Grandpa losing his temper.
“Not from where I’m sitting. It’s time you started acting like a man!” Edward told him. “You’re going to take on more responsibility around here. While Trey’s away on his honeymoon you’ll be handling his projects. Once he’s back your going to start handling your own projects, assigned by me. The days of you being babied around here are over.”
“That’s not fair, I work hard.” Josh yelled. This was too much! While Trey was off on a honeymoon with the woman he loved. He would have to do Trey’s job! The hell I am he thought!
“And have nothing to show for it.” Edward taunted.
“What’s going on in here?” John demanded coming into the office. He had heard the yelling.
“Just finishing up my review of Josh, he’s a failure.” Edward answered still looking at Josh, who stiffened in anger.

 Legacy's Forbidden Love part forty-one

Trey led Kristen down several long halls toward the back wing of the house. Kristen moved slowly clearly hurting from the day’s activities. He had noticed her rubbing her neck and arms during his grandfather’s long story. He couldn’t believe she had mucked out the stables. She was barely recovered from her recent ordeal. He was going to have a long talk with her. Her behavior worried him on a number of levels. They finally reached her room. Opening the door Trey led her inside. Kristen stared around in wonder. The room was huge. They had stepped into a large living room, with several cream colored sofa’s. The room was carpeted in plush pale peach carpeting. There were several end tables and a coffee table, made of a rich cherry wood. Several large stands lined the walls with nick knacks. And there were several large windows, framed with white lace curtains. A huge fireplace took up one wall. A large landscape of the mountains hung over the fireplace.
“There’s a small kitchen, back here.” Trey said opening a swinging door so that she could see the kitchen. “Arthur will have it stocked with whatever you want. Come on, I’ll show you the bedroom. They climbed a large staircase in the middle of the room to the upper level. The bedroom was huge as well. Kristen smiled with pleasure at the sight of a huge four postured bed. That featured a canopy, with white lace curtains. The bed was covered in a lavender comforter. “The bathroom is over here.” Trey showed her. The bathroom was huge. Mirrors lined the walls, where there was a long dressing table made of white marvel. The bathtub was huge! She thought with delight. You could almost swim in it. There was a large glass shower as well. She couldn’t wait to try out the tub. A long row of cub board’s housed clean linens and soap. “And this is the closet.” Trey said showing her where it was. The walk in closet was huge as well. Her clothes had already been moved into the room she noted. “You can change, while I get a fire going.” Trey told her, going out into the bedroom. There was a fireplace at the end of the bed, along with several large chairs, and a table. Kristen picked up the nightgown and robe that servants had laid out for her. Going into the bathroom she quickly changed into them. She didn’t bother to belt the robe but left it hanging loose. The satin nightgown was a pale blue with matching robe. She didn’t need slippers as the bedroom was carpeted with cream colored carpeting. Going out into the bedroom Kristen walked toward a dressing table she had spotted earlier. A gold brush and large gold jewelry box were sitting on the table. Kristen picked up the brush and started brushing her long hair out.
Trey came over to take the brush from her hand, urging her to sit down at the table. She gave a sigh of pleasure when he started brushing her hair. He was very gentle, as he moved the brush through her tangled hair. When he was finished he set the brush aside and picked her up in his arms. Servants had already turned down the covers on the bed. He set her down on the bed, pulling the covers over her. He sat on the edge of the bed as Kristen settled back against the covers. She was disappointed, when he didn’t join her in the bed. She knew it was because of his father, but it didn’t ease her disappointment any.
“We need to talk about what happened today.” Trey told her gazing down at her. “Are you trying to lose the baby?” He finally asked with dread.
“No.” Kristen said with surprise.
“Than help me to understand. Why were you mucking out stables?”
“I told you the ranch foreman ordered me to clean them he still thinks I work for the ranch.” Kristen answered. Why would he think she was trying to lose their baby?
“Why didn’t you tell him you were a guest?” Trey asked patiently.
“I don’t know, it’s not that big of a deal.” She told him. “I didn’t mind cleaning out the stables.”
“It is a big deal, you’re pregnant!”
“I know.” Kristen said with a sigh. “I was bored, and it gave me something to do. I’m not used to sitting around.” Kristen told him truthfully.
“I see.” He said quietly. “Bored or not you need to be more careful. I don’t want any repeats of today. I’ll talk to the foreman tomorrow.”
“Does this mean I can’t go down there anymore?” Kristen asked.
“No, I don’t have a problem with you visiting the stable and barns. I just don’t want you working in them.” He told her lifting her chin so that she was gazing into her eyes.
“Can I still go on the camping trip?”
“Yes.” He told her with a smile. He leaned down to kiss her, brushing her lips lightly. “Now get some rest.”
“I’m not tired.” She said wanting to keep him there. “Can’t you stay for a while?”
With a sigh Trey got up from the bed. He removed his shoes, coat, and tie. Getting into the bed he pulled Kristen into his arms, his mouth covering hers. He moved his hand over her satin clad body. Cupping her hardened nipples through her gown, Kristen whimpered as his lips moved over her neck. He pushed the straps of her nightgown down over her arms, until her breasts were bared to his hungry mouth. Kristen groaned moving her fingers into his hair to hold him in place. Trey moved his hand under the hem of her gown, and up over her soft thighs. He smiled in surprise when he discovered she wasn’t wearing any panties. She willingly parted her legs as his fingers moved over the soft mound of hair. His fingers easily slipped into her wet vagina. She moaned thrashing about on the bed as he fingered her. Smiling Trey replaced his finger with his mouth. He made love to her with his mouth. Kristen cried out from the force of her climax. Trey reached to unfasten his pants, but was interrupted by the sound of a knock. Kristen gave a start and sat up. “Someone’s at the door!” She pulled the covers up, to cover her nakedness. Trey got off the bed reluctantly and went to answer the door that opened into the hallway.
“Sir, your father asked me to remind you that he is waiting for you in the study.” Arthur said taking in Trey’s appearance.
“Tell him I’ll be down in a few minutes.” Trey replied starting to close the door.
“I’ve been instructed to escort you downstairs Sir.” Arthur said calmly.
“I can get there on my own.” Trey said slamming the door. Dammit!! His Dad was driving him nuts. Walking toward the bed Trey grabbed his shoes from the floor, before sitting on the edge of the bed to put them on. “I have to go.”
“I know.” Kristen said with a sigh.
“Get some rest; I’ll see you in the morning.” Trey said before brushing her lips with his. Leaving the room he found Arthur waiting for him. He followed the old butler downstairs. They found John working on paper work at his desk.
“Will you be needing anything else Sir.” Arthur asked having delivered Trey.
“No, thank you Arthur.” John answered looking up from his paper work. Trey looked fit to be tied.
“I don’t need a damn escort!” Trey said angrily as soon as Arthur had closed the door to the study.
“Than you shouldn’t have taken so long.” John answered.
“I wasn’t gone very long.” Trey grumbled.
“We need to get ready for the meeting tomorrow.” John said changing the subject. “Take a look at these.”
Trey took the folders his Dad handed him. Opening them he settled back in his chair to review the reports. It was going to be a long boring night.

 Legacy's Forbidden Love part forty

Seated in the parlor Kristen listened to Edward as he told her all about his family. The Harrington family traced their roots back to Scotland. Where, their Ancestor had been the son of a Scottish laird. The laird had married an English Lord’s daughter and had three sons. The youngest son being a wanderer had left Scotland to travel to America. And was one of the first settlers to settle in the new word. He had married and had four children, two boys and two girls. The younger son like his father was a wanderer and he left home to explore the New World. He wandered the New World and was one of the first settlers to settle in Missouri. He married and had three boys. One of which had put together a heard of cattle. He hired good men to drive them to Montana. He purchased the land from the government. And became the first rancher in Montana. The land he selected was near his crow friend’s. So he didn’t have much trouble with Indian’s. He had married a beautiful Crow maiden. It was a hard life; they had to travel long distances for supplies. They raised most of their own food, living off the land. He had settled in a beautiful valley hidden in the mountains. He had four children, three boys and a girl. The boys had gone on to build the Harrington Ranch into empire. They had invested heavily into the railroad, and shipping industries. Their investments had paid off heavily. As the years passed every generation had broadened the power and wealth of the Harrington family. The ranch though huge, had never been their primary source of income. It was more of a hobby. Trey’s Great Grandfather had been one of the first oilmen. She learned that the Harrington family had their hands in just about everything. The company grew with every passing year. Recession hadn't hurt them at all. And now they were the wealthiest family on the planet. Kristen enjoyed the stories he shared with her. And was pleased to find out that they were part Indian. In fact all the Harrington wives had been crow maidens, since the Harrington’s had first settled in Montana. Edward had been the one to break that mold by marrying a white woman. The Harrington’s were related by marriage to a Duke in England. Edward’s daughter Megan had married a Duke. It was all very interesting and quite overwhelming.
“And that is everything you need to know about are family for now.” Edward said finishing off his tale. He glanced at his watch. He had been talking for several hours. John, Jessica, and Trey had come into the room during his long tale.
“It’s getting late, you need to rest.” Trey told her taking her arm. He could see how weary she was.
“That reminds me; I had Kristen’s things moved to Lisa’s suite of rooms.” Edward told Trey.
“What? Why?” John asked in annoyance. Well aware that Lisa’s rooms could be accessed by a secret passageway.
“She’ll be more comfortable.” Edward answered his son with a shrug. “Kristen, you’ll join Trey and I at the club for lunch tomorrow.” Edward ordered. “Trey can show you where your new room is.”
“We have work to do tonight. So don’t be too long.” John warned Trey with a frown. “Dammit Dad, you had no business moving that girl!” John told his father angrily when Trey and Kristen had gone.
“You had her staying in a crappy room.” Edward answered looking at his son. “Why?”
“There was nothing wrong with that room. Kristen liked it!” John defended.
“That’s because she hasn’t seen the nicer rooms. Why isn’t she staying in Trey’s room?” Edward asked him.
“It wouldn’t be proper they’re not married yet.” John replied.
“Cut the bullshit!” Edward told him angrily. “The girl’s knocked up; clearly Trey’s already bedded her.”
“Dad there’s more going on here than you realize.” John said with a sigh.
“You think I don’t know that there’s something weird going on around here.” Edward told him with a laugh that was devoid of amusement. “Spill it.”
“Josh is in love with her.” John admitted finally.
“What?” Edward asked. So that was what all the friction was about.
“Josh met Kristen on a beach in California. He fell in love with her right off.” John told his Dad.
“I’m confused. How is it that she’s carrying Trey’s child.” Edward asked with a frown.
“I was concerned about Josh dating someone so young. I sent him to Arizona to take care of some business. While he was gone Trey moved in on her.” John told him with a grimace.
“How does Trey know the child’s his?” Edward asked his son.
“Josh didn’t sleep with her.”
“But Trey did.” Edward said with a smile. Trey had always gone after what he wanted. “Josh is a fool.”
“That’s why I put Kristen in one of the guest rooms. Trey can’t access the room from the secret passageway.” John told him ignoring his comment about Josh...
“You baby that boy too much. No wonder he’s such a wimp.” Edward told him with a frown.
“Josh isn’t a wimp, he’s a good boy.” John defended.
“Not from where I’m standing. You need to stop coddling the boy, he’s a grown man. Kristen stay’s in Lisa’s suite, end of story.” Edward said firmly.
“Dammit Dad!!” John said shaking his head angrily.
“You spend entirely to much time worrying about Josh when you should be worried about Trey.” Edward pointed out in disgust. “I worry about that boy he’s headed for trouble.”
“What do you mean?” John asked already dreading the answer.
“It’s not what he’s done so much as it’s his attitude that worries me.” Edward answered with a frown. “He doesn’t seem to care about anything. And it’s going to get him into serious trouble one of these days.”
“I’ll talk to him.” John replied.
“Trey has an excellent head for business and there’s no fear in him. He handles mob bosses effortlessly because he doesn’t fear them. I reckon he ordered at least twelve hits this year alone.”
“What?” John was shocked.
“Those men with him are hired assassins and they don’t miss. He’s earning quite a reputation in the under world.” Edward continued.
“You have him ordering hits?” John was outraged.
“No, he’s making these calls himself. He’s making some powerful enemies and one of these days it will land him in a box.” Edward answered.
“Dammit!” John muttered. Trey was completely out of control.
“I suggest you back Trey’s marriage to this girl because in my opinion he needs her far more than Joshua. Hopefully she’ll give your son a reason to live because in my opinion Trey doesn’t care whether he lives or dies.” Edward told his son.
“My God!” John mumbled feeling guilty.

“Your main concern right now should beTrey, and this girl he’s marrying. They’ve only known each other for a little over a week that worries me.”
“Why did you give them your blessing? She’s a poor farm girl.” John asked. “You pitched a fit when I married Jessica.”
“Couple reasons. First she’s from an upper middle class family. That owns twenty-two hundred acres of farmland. Your wife came from poor white trash, that didn’t have a pot to piss in.”
“That’s not true; Jessica’s parents owned their house.”
“A two-bedroom shack.” Edward said with a snort. “Kristen may not be rich but she comes from a good solid back ground. Farmers and Ranchers built this country. I have a lot of respect for people who make their living off the land. It’s a hard life, with few rewards. Second, I like this girl, she’s a hard worker. Mucking out stables is dirty work, but she did it with no thought of reward. And she fought to save that steer. Third, Trey is determined to marry her, so it wouldn’t matter if he had my blessing or not.”
“True.” John admitted.
“That’s why I’m taking them up to the old homestead. I want to see how they do with each other.” Edward told him.
“Dad, there’s no time for a camping trip. If you want to show Kristen the old homestead, fly up in one of the chopper’s. There’s a hell of a lot of work that needs to be done before this wedding. So camping will have to wait.”
“I’ve made my decision, were going. We’ll only be gone four days. It will take your wife that long to make the necessary arrangements for New York.” Edward said firmly.
“I can’t spare Trey from work. He’s in charge of several big projects.”
“Josh can handle things why Trey’s gone. It’s about time that boy stepped up to the plate.” Edward told John still frowning.
John sighed. Clearly his father wasn’t going to listen to him. He’d do whatever he damned well pleased just like he always did. But maybe his Dad was right. Clearly Trey was in trouble.
“You need to fire Paul Williams he’s incompetent!” Edward said.
“Paul is a good man.” John shook his head at his father he had known this was coming.
“If he’s so good why is the entire security system down?” Edward asked. “Fire him, I’ll find somebody to replace him.
“I’m not firing him Dad. He’s worked for the ranch for a lot of years.” John replied.
“Because of him your family is vulnerable to attack, get rid of him or I will!” Edward warned.
“He stays! And that’s final!” John retorted.
“I guess you’ve forgotten I own this ranch.” He pointed out.
“You turned over the running of the ranch to me years ago it’s my call now.” John reminded him with a frown.
“Clearly that was a mistake.” Edward grumbled causing John to stiffen.

 Legacy's Forbidden Love part-thirty-nine

Staring toward the doorway Kristen had just entered Trey said with a smile. “Yes she is.”
Kristen smiled in relief as Trey started toward her. And than Trey’s Grandpa turned around to face her. Kristen was shocked to see Edward the old hand that had helped her with the steer.
Edward stared at the vision in the doorway. “Lisa.” He said his voice shaking with emotion.
“Kristen.” She reminded him as Trey brought her to meet him.
“Grandpa this is Kristen, the girl I’m going to marry.” Trey told his Grandpa who looked like he’d just seen a ghost.
“Kristen.” Edward replied in confusion. Her resemblance to his late wife was startling. He just stared at her dumbfounded. Finally his head cleared enough to think. “Kristen, you’re marrying one of our hands?” Edward asked remembering the girl as the girl he had met earlier in the day.
“What? No!” Trey answered startled by the question.
“Than why was she mucking out stables when I met her earlier?” Edward asked Trey regaining his composure.
“What?” Trey asked in confusion.
“You clean up well.” Edward told Kristen taking her hand in his.
“Thank you.” Kristen replied blushing. This was so embarrassing.
“I thought you said you hadn’t talked to my Dad?” John said in confusion.
“He didn’t tell me he was Trey’s Grandfather.” Kristen replied quietly.
“You didn’t tell me you were Trey’s fiancée.” Edward told her releasing her hand.
“Wait a minute! You were mucking out the stables?” Trey questioned still confused.
“She was when I met her this morning. I never would have guessed she was your fiancée. She was dressed in jeans, boots, and a T-shirt. She’s a hard worker; I inspected the stalls she cleaned out.” Edward commented lost in thought. He had liked this girl instantly. And now to discover she was the girl Trey intended to marry. This put a different tilt on things.
“Why were you cleaning stalls?” Trey asked staring at her in confusion.
“I went down to the stables to look at the horses. The foreman came along and mistook me for an employee. He put me to work cleaning stalls.” Kristen answered with a shrug. “It’s no big deal.”
“You’re pregnant! You just got out of the hospital, your suppose to be resting” Trey told her.
Since he was a rich kid, who had probably never worked an honest day in his life, Kristen felt safe in saying. “It sounds harder than it really is. Trust me it’s not hard to clean out a stall.”
“Really. I’ve mucked out my share of stalls, and it’s not easy work.” Trey commented seeing her surprised look he added. “My first job was mucking stables on the ranch.”
“Oh, well I didn’t do it for very long.” She lied.
“She cleaned out four stalls.” Edward put in.
“It didn’t take that long.” Kristen assured him quickly.
“I don’t care how long it took your suppose to be resting.” Trey told her trying to hold onto his temper.
“She didn’t get much of that. When she got done with the stalls, she rode out to help round up strays. I found her trying to pull a steer out that got stuck in water out in the north pasture.”
“What?” Trey said angrily.
“It was no big deal.” Kristen assured him.
“Takes gumption to try to pull a steer out by yourself. Most would go get help.” Edward observed.
“So that’s why you came in looking like a drowned rat.” John said smiling. Trey looked ready to wring her neck.
“There wasn’t time to go for help, he was drowning. Besides the horse did all the work.
“She managed to get him unstuck. But the steer laid over on his side. Before she could get him all the way out. I helped pull him out the rest of the way.”
“Is the steer alright?” John asked his Dad with a frown.
“No, I had to put it down.” Edward replied. He didn’t miss the hurt that came into Kristen’s eyes. She had wanted to save the steer. Farm life had not hardened her, she still cared for things. Even a steer that was bound for someone’s plate. She was just like Lisa he thought. She would give Trey fits. But he would never be bored with her. “Well I’ve seen and heard all I need too. Kristen it’s my honor to welcome you into our family. You have my blessing.” He told them as he reached out and hugged Kristen.
Sitting on the sofa Jessica nearly dropped her wine glass. She had been married to John for twenty-three years and had never seen Edward hug a single person, including his daughter. The fact that he was giving Trey his blessing to marry Kristen really hurt. He had never accepted Jessica. But here he was welcoming some poor farm girl. It was enough to make her sick. The bastard!
“Let’s eat.” Edward said with a smile slapping Trey on the back.
“I’m starved, I missed lunch.” Kristen told Edward smiling in relief.
“You didn’t eat lunch?” Trey asked he still looked as if he wanted to throttle her. “We need to have a talk.”
“Talk with her later.” Edward said guiding Kristen from the room. “I’ll tell you all about Harrington family over dinner.”
John waited until they were out of the room before turning to Trey. “What the hell just happened here?”
“I told you Grandpa wouldn’t have a problem with me marrying Kristen.” Trey said in an attempt hide his confusion.
“I guess you didn’t hear him threaten to disinherit you.” John grumbled.
“Why did he change his mind?” Josh wondered aloud.
“Who knows? The old bastard probably losing his marbles.” Jessica put in angrily. John, Josh and Trey turned to look at her in surprise.
“What difference does it make? The important thing is he gave us his blessing.” Trey said handing his drink to a waiting butler.
“I can’t believe she cleaned the stables.” Josh said shaking his head.
“I doubt she’ll carry the baby to term.” Jessica commented taking another sip of wine.
“What do you mean?” Trey asked his Mom.
“She’s a miscarriage waiting to happen.” Jessica said feeling tipsy from the wine she had drunk.
“There aren’t going to be any repeats of today.” Trey assured them storming from the room.
“She’s giving him fits.” John commented after his son had left the room. He frowned when he noticed Jessica taking another glass of wine from a butler.
“I’m going to go get something to eat.” Josh said before leaving the room, a dark frown on his face. He’d secretly hoped his grandfather would stop Trey’s marriage to Kristen. And was disappointed by the turn of events.
“Jess, I think you’ve had enough.” John said after Josh had gone, indicating the glass of wine in her hand.
“Really? I don’t think so.” Jessica told him with a shake of her head. “He hugged her.” Jessica commented before taking a long swallow of wine.
“So?” John asked with a frown. He had never seen his wife like this.
“So, we’ve been married for twenty-three years and I’ve never see him hug anyone.” Jessica said with a frown. Before, quickly finishing her glass of wine.
“I don’t understand it either. Unless he’s playing some sort of game.” John told her.
“What do you mean?” Jessica asked looking at her husband curiously.
“It was too easy; he has to be up to something.” John answered still thinking over his father’s behavior.
“Excuse me Sir, but your father would like me to remind you that he doesn’t like to be kept waiting.” Arthur said from the doorway.
Nodding his head John grasped Jessica arm and led her from the room.

Leaving the room Trey had headed down to the main dinning room. His Grandfather and Kristen were already seated at the dinning room table. A butler pulled out a chair for him and he sat next to Kristen. Joshua arrived a few minutes later to take a seat across from Kristen.
“Where’s your Grandma?” Trey asked when the woman still hadn’t arrived.
“She went back to Spokane.” Kristen answered. She didn’t like being left here all alone. But she knew her Grandma had been right to leave. Her Grandma was headed back to Spokane to deal with the rest of their family. Something she couldn’t trust her mother to do. Her Grandma would head down to the family farm, when she got back. She would talk to Kristen’s Dad and explain everything.
“I’m surprised you didn’t go with her?” Josh asked from across the table.
“I didn’t think I would be able too.” Kristen told him in surprise.
“You’re not a hostage.” Josh told her earning a glare from Trey.
“Oh.” Kristen said she wasn’t so sure of that.
“You’re not a hostage, but it is important that you stay here for now.” Trey explained seeing her confusion.
Edward watched the exchange with interest. There was defiantly something amiss between the two brothers. With a wave of his hand he summoned Arthur over. “Tell my son, I don’t like to be kept waiting.”
“Yes Sir.” Arthur said before turning to do his bidding.

John and Jessica arrived at the table. John took a seat at the end of the table opposite his father. Jessica was seated to her husband’s right, preferring to be as far away from her father in-law as possible.
“About time.” Edward grumbled nodding to Arthur to begin serving them. When the servants were finished, Edward gazed down the table at his son. “I assume you’ve arranged the board meeting I requested.” He asked frowning.
“Yes.” John answered his father.
“Good.” Edward said cutting into his steak. They ate in silence, everyone’s nerves on edge. Edward found himself looking at Kristen throughout the meal. He couldn’t get over her resemblance to his late wife. Even after all these years his heart ached for his late wife. How he had loved her. He had never loved another woman. He was quite fond of his current wife and they had a good marriage. Jasmine accepted him and what he was able to give of himself. She never complained, but than she had her own ghost. She had lost her first husband. He had been the love of her life, just as Lisa had been his. After dinner he would tell Kristen about his family. “Kristen, do you like to camp?” Edward asked absently.
“Yes, I love the outdoors, especially the mountains.” Kristen answered with a smile of longing.
“Good. I’m planning to ride up to the old homestead day after tomorrow, you’ll accompany me.” Edward said looking at Kristen.
“Okay.” Kristen said unable to hide her enthusiasm.
“Trey you’ll accompany of course.” Edward added seeing that Trey was about to object.
“Sure Grandpa.” Trey answered, he’d have to cancel a dozen meetings. But what the hell! Kristen clearly wanted to go.
“No Dad! Trey has responsibilities at work. I can’t spare him right now.” John told his Dad.
“Surely you can spare him for four days. I want to take a trip up to the old homestead. Show Kristen where Trey’s great grandfather settled.” Edward replied firmly.
“It’s not possible Dad.” John answered just as firmly.
“Fine, I’ll take Kristen than.”
“No, she’s not going without me.” Trey said shaking his head at his Grandpa.
“But Trey, I want to go. Please.” She pleaded with him.
“Seems were at an impasse.” Edward grumbled determined to have his way.
“Alright than, as CEO of Harrington I’m ordering Trey to come. You’ll have to make do without him.”
“Dad!” John warned him.
“I’ve made my decision. Josh can handle Trey’s responsibilities.” Edward told his son.
“What about the wedding?” Jessica asked in annoyance.
“What about it?” Edward asked looking at Jessica. Who he noted was on her fourth glass of wine. He was surprised she could speak clearly.
“There’s a lot to be done. We still need to have an engagement portrait done of them. So, that we can announce their engagement. Kristen needs to be outfitted with a new wardrobe. There’s a lot to be done, and not much time.” Jessica told him.
“Have a photographer set up a shoot for tomorrow evening. They can do the photo session than.” Edward told her. “As for the wardrobe, will fly to New York when we get back and see to that.”
Kristen doesn’t have a gown to wear for the portrait.” Jessica told him shaking her head.
“I’ll see to that. Set the photo session up for tomorrow.” Edward said rising from the table. “Come along now Kristen and I’ll tell you about the Harrington family.
John glared at his Dad’s back before tossing his napkin onto his plate. He was so angry he wanted to strangle his father. He glanced at Trey, which was a mistake since his son was clearly amused. “You’re not going on any camping trips and that’s final.” John told his son angrily.
“Tell that to Grandpa, he seems to think other wise.” Trey replied with a smile. He was looking forward to the trip. Mainly, because it would give him some time alone with Kristen. Sharing a tent with her would be lots of fun.
“I don’t care what he has to say about it! You’re not going!” John told him a muscle flexing in his cheek.
“He’s Harrington’s CEO I have to obey him.” Trey said still smiling. He got up from the table. “And I won’t let Kristen go without me.” Trey told his Dad firmly before leaving the room.
“I just love warm family dinners.” Jessica said shaking her head as she got up from her chair.
“I’ll talk to Dad. There’s not going to be any trip.” John told her.
“Ha!” Jessica said with a laugh. “He’ll do what ever he damn well wants, and we both know it.”
“I’m going upstairs I’ve had about enough family time for one night.” Josh muttered getting up to leave.
“Poor Josh.” Jessica said after her son was gone. It wasn’t fair that he had to suffer so much.
“Will get through this.” John told her firmly. Though he wasn’t so sure anymore if that was true. His family seemed to be coming apart at the seams. And his father as usual was only making things worse.

 Legacy's Forbidden Love part-thirty-eight

“Easy there.” Damon told her turning her around. She was soaked from head to toe. Her skin felt like ice. He could feel her trembling. “What happened to you?” He asked in concern. Trey would go berserk when he saw her condition.
“It’s a long story. Can I tell you later? I’m so cold!” Kristen said she was shaking all over.
“Let’s get you up to the house.” Damon said turning to walk her up to the house. “I’ve got her.” He said into a hand held radio. By the time they reached the house everyone had assembled in the main hall. Coming to a halt just inside the doors they were greeted by a dozen or more people. Kristen groaned as a dozen eyes turned toward her. Trey, John, and Jessica, were among those looking at her. God hates me she thought glumly.
“What the hell happened to you? Did my Grandpa do this too you?” Trey asked hurrying to her. She was soaked. She had mud on her face and arms. Her jeans and boots were caked with more mud.
“What? No.” Kristen answered in surprise. Why would he think his Grandpa had done this to her. “I’m okay.” She assured him through chattering teeth.
“Did my grandpa talk to you?” Trey asked.
“No, I thought he wasn’t coming till tomorrow.” Kristen answered. “Can we talk later; I need to get out of these clothes.
“Take her upstairs, and get her warmed up.” John told Trey. “Your Grandpa will no doubt be here soon.” He was very relieved that Kristen hadn’t run into his father. But something had happened to the girl. She looked like a drowned rat.

Kristen hurried upstairs with Trey in tow. Once they reached her room she hurried into the bathroom to start filling the tub. Trey followed her to the door. He watched her struggle to pull her boots off, a difficult task as her fingers were numb. “Here let me help you.” Trey said kneeling before her. Grasping her boot he pulled it off. Water dripped onto the floor from the boot. Pulling the other one off, he removed her socks. Kristen was at a loss over what to do. She couldn’t take her cloths off with him in here. But he clearly expected her to do that. He has seen me naked, she thought. Oh hell! She was too cold to care. She could see the steam rising off the hot bath water. With a sigh she pulled her sopping wet T-shirt off. It was a chore getting the wet jeans off, and she was glad to have trey’s help. While he pulled those off, she undid her bra. Tossing it aside, she took her panties off. And quickly, climbed into the tub. She sank into the hot water so that only her head was above water. Within moments the hot water warmed away her chills. She sighed in relief.
“Feeling better?” Trey asked his eyes moving over her naked body. He didn’t see any sign of injury. No bruises! Nothing, to indicate that she had fallen. So how had she gotten wet, and where had she been?
“Much better.” Kristen replied.
“Do you want to tell me what happened?” Trey asked, but they were interrupted by a knock on the door. Going out into the bedroom he closed the bathroom door, just as his father walked in.
“How is she?” John asked in concern.
“She seems to be alright, she doesn’t appear to be injured.” Trey asked annoyed by the interruption.
“How did she get all wet?” John asked with a frown.
“I haven’t had a chance to ask her yet. She’s taking a hot bath.” Trey replied.
“Well explanations will have to wait until later. Your Grandpa’s back, and he’s pissed! He thinks security sent him on a wild goose chase per my orders.” John told Trey. “You’d better go shower and change. Your grandpa wants us all present at dinner.
“What about Kristen?” Trey asked in annoyance.
“What about her?” John asked heading to the door.
“She clearly needs to rest after her ordeal.” Trey told his father.
“She’ll have to rest later.” John called over his shoulder as he walked out.
Christ! Trey thought walking over to the closet to open the door. There wasn’t a lot to choose from. Kristen needed to be fitted for an entire wardrobe and soon. Searching through the hangers Trey found a black gown that would do for dinner. Laying it on the bed. He went to the dressers and pulled out a black corset and stockings with matching black panties. He laid those on the bed as well. Before opening the jewelry box to retrieve the diamond necklace, bracelet, and earrings he had bought her. She needed more jewelry as well. With a sigh, he went back into the bathroom. He found Kristen washing her hair. She glanced up with a blush when he entered.
“I laid some clothes out for you to wear for dinner.” Trey replied enchanted by her blush. He couldn’t keep his eyes from wandering over her naked flesh. “Dinner’s with my Grandpa are always formal.” He explained quickly. “I need to go shower and change as well. I’ll see you at dinner.” He quickly left the room, ignoring the urge to join her. Forcing celibacy on him was the worst thing his father had ever done to him. And it wouldn’t work he vowed, he just needed to find away to get around his father’s latest rule. He could of course call any number of women who would be more than willing to satisfy his needs. But he wanted Kristen too much to turn to another woman. He’d been raised to believe in commitment. His parent’s had set a strong example in that department. They were completely devoted to each other. And he knew his father had never been unfaithful to his mother. That was his one worry. He had cheated on his first wife on several occasions. He had been very discreet and his wife had never learned of his cheating. He had loved his wife very much, and he’d hated cheating on her. But he’d closed several deals during his marriage by bedding other women. And then his wife had been killed, and he’d had to live with his guilt. Now there was Kristen to consider, he was determined to be faithful to her. He wouldn’t make the same mistakes in this marriage.

Edward strolled into a large formal parlor wearing a black tux. Jessica was seated on the couch with a glass of wine in her hand. She was dressed in a green floor length gown. That was cut low in the front, displaying her ample cleavage. John was standing by the fireplace with a drink in his hand. He was dressed in a black tuxedo as well. “Where is everyone?” Edward asked taking a drink from a tray carried by a young butler.
“Their getting ready, they should be down in a few minutes.” John answered taking a swallow from his glass. He was drinking whiskey straight, hoping to settle his nerves.
“So tell me about this girl you’re allowing Trey to marry.” Edward asked turning to look at his son.
“She’s a very nice girl.” John said simply.
“That’s it. What do you know about this girl if anything?” Edward demanded.
“Gramps.” Trey said by way of greeting as he entered the parlor dressed in a black tuxedo as well. He grabbed a drink off a butler’s tray.
“So where’s this girl you’re marrying?” Edward asked him with a frown.
“Upstairs, she’ll be down in a few minutes.” Trey answered bracing himself.
“What the hell? Thanks for ditching me at the office.” Josh said angrily, he was still dressed in the suit he’d worn to work. “Hi Grandpa.” Josh said in surprise.
“Your grandpa showed up a day early.” John said with a frown.
“And your father sent me on a wild goose chase.” Edward added. “Guess were all pissed. So Trey tell me about this girl you’re marrying. Where did you meet her?”
“Yes Trey tell us how you met?” Josh asked sarcastically, earning a glare from his brother.
“I met her in L.A, she was vacationing there.” Trey answered, shooting a look of warning at Josh.
“How long have you known this girl?” Edward asked not missing the friction between the two brothers.
“A little over week.” Trey answered reluctantly.
“I see.” Edward said with a frown of disapproval.
“She’s a nice girl, you’ll like her.” Trey added quickly.
“Can’t be too nice she’s knocked up?” Edward replied.
“Do you have my house bugged?” John demanded anger evident in his voice. How had his father found out about the pregnancy?
“Has a paternity test been performed yet?” Edward asked ignoring John’s question.
“No.” Trey replied with a shake of his head.
“Why not?” Edward asked him.
“Because there’s no question that the baby is mine. She was a virgin when I slept with her.” Trey answered with a grimace.
“Are you sure? Women can fake a lot of things.” Edward told him.
“Yes, there was blood on the sheets.” Trey said uncomfortably. He was glad Kristen wasn’t present for this.
“She could have hopped in bed with someone else after she left you?” Edward told him.
“She’s not like that.” Trey told him quietly.
“How would you know? You’ve only known her a little over a week.” Edward replied. “Even if the baby is yours. You don’t have to marry her, she can have an abortion.” Edward told him.
“She’s not getting an abortion. It’s my baby, and I want it.” Trey told his Grandpa firmly.
“Than will pay her off and take the baby.” Edward told him with a shrug.
“I’m marrying her.” Trey said firmly.
“No you’re not, I forbid it.” Edward told him.
“You can’t, I’m old enough to make my own choice.”
“I can. As long as you work in my company and live under my roof you’ll obey me.” Edward told him his voice rising in anger.
“Fine I quit!” Trey told him calmly. “I don’t have to work for Harrington; there are plenty of companies that would love to have me.”
“Maybe, but I doubt they would pay as well or offer you the power you now enjoy. Think about it Trey is this girl worth losing everything over.” Edward demanded loudly.
